AGC, the world’s first automotive glass manufacturer, saves more than 13000 man hours per year through RPA

AGC was founded in 1907 and headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. It independently produced refractory bricks for glass furnace in 1916 and soda ash as glass raw material in 1917. In recent years, with the aging of Japan's population and the arrival of the wave of digital transformation, in order to improve work efficiency, save human resources and optimize operating costs, AGC began to apply RPA as early as 2017 to automate more than 100 business scenarios such as accounting, manufacturing and logistics, saving more than 13000 man hours a year.

In the selection of "smart work award 2021" held by the Japanese government (a famous media with a history of 52 years), AGC won the special award of the jury for RPA project to commend AGC's rich achievements in RPA application in the process of digital transformation.

Although AGC ranks first in the world market share of automotive glass manufacturers, with annual sales of more than 1.4 trillion yen, it is not easy to be invincible in the rapidly changing business environment. In order to strengthen the competitiveness of the industry, in 2017, under the decision of AGC's senior management, the road of digital transformation was started, and an independent DX (digital transformation) department was established, and Terai was appointed as the head to promote the digital transformation process of the whole group.

Siguchi, head of AGC's digital transformation, said that RPA is one of the important tools of AGC's digital transformation plan, which was tried out in the accounting department as early as 2017. The application effect of RPA exceeded our expectations. Then in 2018, we expanded it to other departments and increased the number of automated business scenarios to 25. In order to ensure the promotion rate and effect of RPA project, we entrust the whole design process and maintenance to the third-party technical service provider, but some simple automation processes are completed by employees. Facts have proved that this hybrid mode is a good choice.

With the help of this mixed mode, AGC's RPA project has made rapid progress and successfully expanded in manufacturing, retail, logistics, accounting and other departments. By the end of 2019, AGC has saved 4400 man hours per year through RPA; By the end of 2020, AGC has continued to expand the application scope of RPA, saved more than 13000 man hours, and increased the number of business automation scenarios to more than 100.

When it comes to how to successfully expand RPA internally, taniya said that AGC will hold "intelligent AGC Exhibition" internally every year, which mainly introduces the company's application cases of various digital innovative technologies. At this exhibition, we held RPA demonstration for Japanese headquarters and overseas branches, and attracted the attention of many departments.

In addition, an online RPA sharing conference was held in 2020. At that time, more than 600 employees participated in the event, which shows that employees are very interested in RPA. In order to continuously output RPA knowledge, AGC will regularly hold small RPA sharing meetings, such as RPA latest technology, RPA practical application case sharing, etc. the scale is not necessarily large, but it will increase employees' interest and participation in RPA.

Terai said that this is an affirmation of AGC's digital transformation and the results of applying RPA, which makes AGC more determined to apply RPA and firmly believe that it will play an important role in the road of digital transformation.

In order to continuously deepen the application of digital automation, AGC has formulated a detailed RPA ecological education plan. Terai said that in the future, each department of AGC will set up three new positions for RPA, namely RPA director, RPA development / maintenance engineer and RPA practitioners, so as to ensure the smooth expansion and implementation of automation projects.

RPA supervisor needs to have rich automation theoretical knowledge and practical ability, and AGC DX department will conduct systematic training for him; RPA development / maintenance engineer needs to be proficient in automatic process design and other functions, and will receive AGC training help every day; RPA practitioners are relatively simple, as long as they can basic automatic operation.

In terms of RPA technology innovation, AGC will increase the integration with other intelligent technologies. At present, the combination with OCR, NLP, ML and other technologies is very smooth, which is also the only way to expand RPA boundary capability.
